Meet Dr. Erik M. Unger, Board-certified Periodontist
Dr. Unger is a board-certified periodontist who specializes in periodontal gum disease treatment, wisdom tooth extraction, root canal treatment, dental implant placement, and he is board certified in IV sedation.
Although he may seem like a science nerd like Dr. P., Dr. Unger’s patients, family, and friends consider him down-to-earth, outgoing, and fun. Born in Tucson, Arizona, Dr. Unger claims to have lived everywhere. This includes Texas, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania where he became a fan of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Dr. Unger began his education at the University of Arizona and continued on to the prestigious University of the Pacific School of Dentistry. As his passion grew for dentistry he found that he wanted to become specialized in his field. Dr. Unger continued his education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham where he was awarded his Certificate in Periodontology.

Periodontist Committed to His Patients
Periodontal disease (gum disease) is often discovered in the advanced stages because the symptoms are not as obvious until it is too late. For this reason, Dr. Unger has fully committed himself to his patient’s oral health. Dr. Unger makes a point to involve his patients in their periodontal disease treatment and he welcomes their questions. He finds that working together as a team supports the success of treatment. Dr. Unger finds no greater reward than to help his patients regain their confidence, to smile with joy, and enjoy their favorite meals. Continuing education is imperative for Dr. Unger to remain at the cutting edge of dental technology for his patients. He is affiliated with the Western Society of Periodontology, the American Academy of Periodontology, the Central Arizona Dental Association and American Dental Association to support his efforts. Dr. Unger is board-certified and a Diplomate with the American Board of Periodontology.
How Does One Become a Diplomate of Periodontology?
To become a Diplomate a periodontist must achieve more than the mandatory education required for board certification in Periodontology. Diplomates must meet the following requirements:
- Basic college education and completion of dental school degree as a D.D.S. or D.M.D.
- Completion of advanced education in the program in Periodontology by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association.
- Must qualify comprehensively and pass an oral examination to include every phase of periodontal disease and treatment, including dental implants.
- To remain in good standing, Diplomates must recertify every six years.
Outdoors and Family Time
While Dr. Unger isn’t practicing dentistry, he enjoys spending time outdoors. Hiking in Arizona is one way he relaxes. Dr. Unger also enjoys running, snowboarding, and he loves to cook and try out new and exotic foods. Although, he enjoys spending time with his family most.
