Bone Grafting, Phoenix, AZ.
Many people don’t even realize their jaws have been shrinking quietly. It usually happens when a tooth is pulled and not replaced with an artificial tooth or due to advanced-stage gum disease. At Paradise Ridge Family Dentistry, Dr. Bobby performs a surgical procedure to rebuild lost jawbone structure before replacing a missing tooth.
Dental bone grafting is a surgical procedure that adds bone material to the jaw where the bone is thinning, deteriorated, or has been lost entirely. The grafting material helps the damaged bone to regrow and also supports surrounding gum tissues.
The new bone forms in a few months and is strong enough to support a dental implant and hold dentures securely. Bone loss after tooth extraction or gum disease is common, but it can be stopped with bone grafting.

Bone Grafting For Dental Implant
Dental implants need specific depth and density of the jawbone to stay securely in place. After extraction, if the missing tooth is not replaced for a long time, the jawbone loses its strength. Bone grafting adds strength to a thin and weak jawbone, which makes the bone strong enough for implant placement.
Bone Grafting After Gum Disease and Infection
Bone grafting procedures are commonly done for patients with gum disease and dental infections because it not only damages the soft tissue but also affects the bone underneath. The aim for such cases is to restore the bone that has been lost to provide a stable supportive structure to the affected teeth and reduce the risk of tooth loss.
Rebuilding Jawbone for Long Term Tooth Loss
A missing tooth can lead to bone deterioration over time. So, the longer the space is not replaced by an artificial tooth, the more bone loss occurs. In such cases, the bone loss is significant enough to change the shape of the face.
At Paradise Ridge Family Dentistry, we offer bone grafting to patients who have had missing teeth for years. The lost bone volume is restored through grafting before restorations like implants or dentures are placed.
Sinus Lift
Sometimes, the sinus cavity is located too close to the upper jawbone, leaving little to no place for implant placement. A sinus lift creates that space by raising the sinus floor and filling the gap with bone graft material, giving sufficient space for implants.
Ridge Preservation
The bone supporting the tooth starts to break down as soon as the tooth is removed. An effective solution for this problem is to place a grafting material. It not only prevents damage to the neighbouring teeth but also supports bone regeneration.
We fill the socket with graft material at the time of extraction. This procedure is especially beneficial for patients who have a plan to replace their missing teeth with a dental implant.
Does Dental Bone Grafting Hurt?
Bone grafting is an oral surgery procedure, done with local anesthesia. There is no pain during treatment. There is some discomfort and sensation after anesthesia wears off. Soreness and pain is normal after dental surgeries. It is manageable with post treatment care and precautions.
Types of Dental Bone Grafts We Do In Phoenix
There are four basic types of dental bone grafts that we do to repair or rebuild damaged jawbone.
Autograft
An autograft is taken from your own body, typically from the jaw, chin, or in some cases the hip or shin. Because the transferred bone is your own, the chances of tissue rejection are low, and integration is highly successful.
Allograft
This type of graft is from human donors, and it is a popular choice in dental bone grafts. However, the risk of an adverse immune response is always present and can be reduced by using a properly prepared donor material.
Xenograft
Xenografts are bone grafts obtained from non-human donors, typically bovine (cattle). Such grafts are readily available but may require more time for integration and remodeling.
Alloplast
An alloplast is a lab-made synthetic bone graft material and is safe from disease transmission risk. However, it has fewer biological properties to stimulate bone growth. Therefore, integration can take longer than other graft types.
The Bone Grafting Procedure
Every bone grafting case at Paradise Ridge Family Dentistry starts with a full exam that includes X-ray and 3D imaging of the jawbone that is required to plan your treatment. We provide local anaesthesia to numb the surgical site. Once you are comfortable, we make a small incision in your gum to reach the jawbone for the next steps,
The grafting material is placed carefully where the jawbone is damaged or thin. Lastly, a protective membrane is laid over it to encourage proper healing, and the gum tissue is sutured back securely. In most cases, the procedure lasts between 45 minutes and 1½ hours.
Bone Grafting Cost
In Phoenix, AZ., the average cost of a dental graft procedure ranges from $200 to $1200. This can vary depending upon factors like graft type used and complexity of the case. To get precise cost estimates, getting a personalized consultation is necessary.
Even if you have insurance, the coverage is decided by the type of your plan and the clinical necessity of the procedure. Call us and our office coordinator will guide you regarding coverage.
Recovery and Aftercare
Common side effects of the surgery are pain and discomfort. You can take prescribed painkillers or use ice packs to relieve symptoms. For the first week, it is recommended to consume soft foods with high nutritional value such as broth, smoothies, yogurt, etc.
Soreness around the graft site subsides within one week. During this time, if you notice bleeding, swelling that worsens, signs of infection, or persistent foul odor or bad taste, consult your doctor immediately. It takes around 3 to 6 months for the graft material to integrate fully into your bone. However, the recovery duration also depends on the size of the graft and the individual.
Graft Failure and Dislodgement Concerns
Graft failure is uncommon but can occur if the recovery process is disrupted due to infection, smoking, or too much jaw movement soon after the surgery. Following aftercare instructions carefully, particularly avoiding smoking, strenuous activity, and hard foods, significantly reduces this risk.
Small pieces of graft can also fall off during the first few days of healing, but this is not a sign of graft failure. However, if any symptom feels abnormal, including persistent pain or swelling beyond the first week, consult your dentist immediately.
Cost
Bone grafting in Phoenix, AZ typically ranges from $300 to $3000 depending on the type of graft material used and complexity of the case. Even if you have insurance, the coverage is decided by the type of your plan and the clinical necessity of the procedure. To get precise cost estimates, a personalized consultation is necessary.
